Erik ten Hag has announced club captain Harry Maguire is free to leave the club if he chooses.
Harry Maguire is only the nominal captain of Manchester United, having only been selected to start eight Premier League matches out of 38 this season.
Many supporters expect Maguire to leave the club in the summer in pursuit of more regular starters.
While he features in this latest England squad, his Euro 2024 spot will be at stake if he repeats it again this season at Old Trafford.
Harry Maguire can decide his futureManchester United manager Erik Ten Hag says he would love to have Maguire at his side, but ultimately it will be a decision for the defender.
The boss told The Times: “Let’s just say I’m glad he’s here and when we needed him, he got his job done. But it’s also a decision he has to make.”
He added: “No one can be satisfied with this situation. He is not good. He always trains at his best, so with 100% effort.
“So he handles that situation well and he’s that way and with his captaincy, he’s very important to the team.”
Manchester United paid £80m for Harry Maguire in 2019 and he remains one of the club’s most expensive signings ever.
But there is real competition for places at United, with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof all ahead of him.
So does left-back Luke Shaw, who is preferred to play at center-back over Maguire.
The FA Cup final will take place this weekend and there is little chance that Maguire will start. Chances are that this much-anticipated celebrity snub will fuel his desire to continue.
Ten Hag won’t stand in his way. United is said to be eyeing Napoli defender Kim Min-Jae as a replacement, Goal reports.
