Congratulations to Manchester United forward Antony, whose February goal against Barcelona in the Europa League that forced a tie has been selected as our male goal of the season.
Fans from all over the world cast votes in a poll to determine the winner after a shortlist of 10 finishers was made public earlier this month.
Due to the extraordinary amount of votes cast and the very tough competition, four goals rapidly emerged as the front-runners, accounting for about 70% of the final score.
THE FINAL FOUR
Alejandro Garnacho’s last-second winner at Fulham’s Craven Cottage is third, while Marcus Rashford’s spectacular length-of-the-pitch effort against Burnley in the Carabao Cup placed fourth.
Jadon Sancho came in second, only after Antony’s winner: the decisive effort against Barcelona in M16, with his calm finish in the barnstorming victory against Liverpool at Old Trafford.Unquestionably, the Brazilian’s left-footed goal into the bottom corner gave us a 4-3 victory against the Catalans on the whole, and it was one of the most exciting moments of the year thus far.
The circumstances and feelings surrounding a goal are also significant factors in determining this award, even though goal quality is certainly a major consideration. Watch it once more in the video up above.
MOST LIKELY HAD TO BE HIM
Customers who vote in our Goal of the Month contests may be aware that Antony has won four of them so far this year.
The Brazilian won it in August with his first goal against Arsenal, and he kept it in October with his long-range goal in Manchester City’s loss.
After defeating Barcelona in February, he scored a third victory. Then, against Real Betis, he added a fourth with an incredible goal. With May’s poll coming up next week, he still has a chance to win a fifth.
Thank you to everyone who cast a vote, and congratulations to Antony on receiving the honor.
