The playmaker has come to be associated with the low-sock appearance.
At Euro 2020, Jack Grealish became a national hero for England and was hailed as the event’s face.
He made a significant contribution to the Three Lions last season, and since his £100 million signing from Aston Villa in August, City supporters have come to love him. As he got more well-known during the summer, his on-field appearance took on a certain iconic quality. His swung-back hair and hulking bare legs made him an instantly recognizable presence on the field.
Now it’s not unusual to see young football players sporting the low socks style, and he has undoubtedly motivated the next generation to add some swagger to their talent. Grealish has now given the background behind his decision to wear his stockings so low on the field.
Before City’s Champions League second-leg match against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, he told UEFA, “That was just something that I’ve done since I was a kid.”
“The socks used to shrink in the wash at Villa, and I believe I was around 14 or 15 at the time. The socks were too small for me to fit over my calves during training.
“I began putting them on during workouts underneath my calves, and that season I ended up playing pretty well. Simply said, it was something that stuck since I had such a successful season.
He said, “I actually don’t,” when asked if he specifically “maintains” his calves. My grandfather always had large calves when he played football; it’s just a family trait.
Since I was a child, I’ve simply had it, in all honesty. According to reports, Grealish is set to sign a seven-figure endorsement agreement with Gucci after the fashion brand took notice of his on-field style.
After entering the field for the closing 20 minutes of City’s 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the first leg at the Etihad last week, the playmaker was obviously a target for Atletico players. After being brought down by a tackle, the attacker was fouled multiple times and had the ball kicked in his face by Angel Correa.
He might take the field tonight in Spain as City looks to advance to the semifinals against Real Madrid, which defeated Chelsea in extra time on Tuesday.
