Henderson Thanks Departing Quartet for Incredible Journey at Liverpool

James Milner and Roberto Firmino played their final games for Liverpool on Sunday.

Following Sunday’s draw against Southampton, which marked the end of their Reds careers, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has sent a touching tribute to James Milner, Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

After winning every major trophy available since moving to Anfield, Liverpool Football Club confirmed earlier this month that all four of the players will depart the team when their contracts expired at the end of June.

In a thrilling 4-4 tie at St Mary’s on Sunday, Milner and Firmino were given one final opportunity to play for the Reds. The Brazilian celebrated by scoring the Reds’ second goal on the South Coast. Meanwhile, Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain were left off of the Reds’ 20-man Premier League roster.

Henderson praised all of the players for the “amazing ride” they had while on Merseyside and wished them the best in their future professional endeavors. Henderson has led the Red since taking over as captain from Steven Gerrard in the summer of 2015.

On Sunday night, Henderson posted on social media, “The end of an era.” “With these guys, I’ve experienced some of my best times in life. Brotherhood and memories that will endure a lifetime.

“Good luck to all of you on your voyage; what a ride. Thank you so much for your support this season, fans. #YNWA”

Vice-captain Milner thanked the away Kop for the reception he received on Sunday after a banner saying “Milner 7 Legend” was unfurled by the away end. Milner has been linked with a move to Brighton and Hove Albion this summer.

It is always an honour to play for you, and it is a pleasure to succeed alongside you, Milner added. “I appreciate everything. Once a red is, always a red.
